EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Market Square, Concarneau" by Charles Bryant, a renowned marine painter from Australia. Painted in the 20th century, this oil on board artwork depicts the vibrant and bustling market square in Concarneau, Brittany, France. Bryant's artistic journey began when he arrived in the UK in 1908 and studied under Julius Olson in St Ives. His exceptional talent led to numerous exhibitions at The Royal Academy between 1913 and 1936, where his works inspired awe and admiration. In addition to his contributions to the art world, Bryant also served as an official artist for the Australian Armed Forces during World War I on the Western Front. Later on, he was invited by the Commonwealth Government to be an official artist for New Guinea's mandated territory in 1923. Notably, he was commissioned to paint the US fleet stationed at Sydney Harbour. Despite these remarkable achievements abroad, Bryant always found himself drawn back to St Ives where he would capture its beauty through his brushstrokes from time to time. "The Market Square" is a testament to Bryant's mastery of color and composition. The painting bursts with life as colorful stalls line up against charming buildings adorned with flags. People mill about amidst trees that provide shade while adding natural hues of greenery. Vibrant shades of reds, blues, whites, yellows blend harmoniously with earthy tones of brown and black while pops of pink and cream add further visual interest.
