In this evocative photograph, taken on the 6th of April, 2002, at Deepdale Stadium, Preston North End's home ground, Tom Finney, the legendary ex-Preston North End player, leads out both teams in a Nationwide Division 1 match against Coventry City, in a special tribute to celebrate his 75th birthday. Tom Finney, affectionately known as "The Preston Plumber" is an iconic figure in English football history. He began his professional career with Preston North End in 1946 and went on to make over 500 appearances for the club, scoring an impressive 187 goals. Finney's talent and dedication to the game earned him 76 caps for the England national team, making him the most capped outfield player in England's history up until 2006. The occasion of his 75th birthday was marked with a special match, where Finney, dressed in a Preston North End blazer and holding a bouquet of flowers, graciously led both teams onto the pitch in a heartwarming gesture. The players, wearing commemorative armbands, formed a guard of honor as Finney made his way to the center circle, where he was greeted with a standing ovation from the capacity crowd. The atmosphere was electric, as fans young and old came together to pay tribute to a man who had given so much to the beautiful game. The match itself ended in a 1-1 draw, but the real victory was the opportunity to honor a true footballing legend and celebrate his remarkable career.
