Dudley Road, Birmingham ARP Service parade after an exercise

Dudley Road, Birmingham ARP Service parade after an exercise. September 1939
In 1935 the Home Office announced that local authorities would be responsible for drawing up plans for public protection and the implementing of Air Raid Protection services. Local councils were made responsible for raising and running a range of ARP services to train civilian volunteers for Stretcher Parties, First Aid Posts, Gas Decontamination Teams, Messengers and Rescue Parties. Both the local Fire Brigades and Ambulance Services were expanded and Auxiliaries were recruited and trained from the civilian population. By March 1939 it was reported that 10, 000 Wardens and 6, 000 Auxiliary Fire Service personnel across the West Midlands had been recruited and their training was well advanced

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Dudley Road, Birmingham ARP Service parade after an exercise in September 1939. During this time, the Home Office had assigned local authorities with the responsibility of developing plans for public protection and implementing Air Raid Protection services. As a result, local councils were tasked with raising and managing various ARP services to train civilian volunteers for different roles such as Stretcher Parties, First Aid Posts, Gas Decontamination Teams, Messengers, and Rescue Parties. To ensure effective response during emergencies, both the local Fire Brigades and Ambulance Services were expanded while Auxiliaries were recruited and trained from the civilian population. By March 1939, approximately 10,000 Wardens and 6,000 Auxiliary Fire Service personnel had been recruited across the West Midlands region alone. The photo depicts a proud display of these dedicated individuals who have undergone extensive training to safeguard their community during times of conflict. The image showcases their commitment to serving on the home front amidst war preparations. Nurses can be seen standing alongside fire brigade members and first aiders as they march down Dudley Road. This historical snapshot offers a glimpse into a crucial period in British history when communities came together to protect one another against potential air raids during World War II. It serves as a reminder of resilience in challenging times and pays tribute to those who selflessly served their country on domestic soil.
