HMS Bristol (D23) was the only Type 82 destroyer of the Royal Navy. Originally intended as the first of a class of new large destroyers to escort the CVA-01 aircraft carriers projected to come into service in the early 1970s, Bristol turned out to be a unique ship. The rest of the class were cancelled when the CVA-01 carriers fell victim to the 1966 Strategic Defence Review.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to a significant moment in naval history. The majestic HMS Bristol, built by Swan Hunter & Tyne Shipbuilders Ltd. , stands tall and proud as it is launched on 30 June 1969. This remarkable vessel, known as the only Type 82 destroyer of the Royal Navy, was initially designed to lead a class of new large destroyers that would accompany the anticipated CVA-01 aircraft carriers. However, fate had other plans for HMS Bristol. Sadly, its sister ships never came into existence due to the cancellation of the CVA-01 carriers following the 1966 Strategic Defence Review. Thus, this ship became an extraordinary anomaly within its fleet. The photograph captures not just a magnificent warship but also represents an era defined by shipbuilding prowess and ambition. It transports us back to the bustling shipyard where skilled craftsmen meticulously constructed this engineering marvel. As we gaze upon this image from Mirrorpix's Memory Lane Prints collection, we can't help but feel awe-inspired by both the grandeur of HMS Bristol and the untold stories hidden within its steel walls. It serves as a reminder of how even in times when plans change unexpectedly, human ingenuity continues to shape our world through these incredible feats of engineering and design.
