EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative WWI poster features a powerful quotation from a speech given by the Prime Minister at the Guildhall in London on 9 November 1914. With the first year of the Great War underway, the British government intensified its efforts to recruit volunteers for the army. The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, established to oversee this campaign, produced posters like this one to inspire and persuade young men to enlist. The quote depicted in the poster reads, "It is a long, drawn-out struggle. Victory will only be secured by great sacrifices of energy, of money, of blood, and of tears, but it must be secured, and it must be secured now." These words, spoken by the Prime Minister during a time of great uncertainty and fear, served to galvanize the British public into action. The rhetoric of sacrifice and the call to duty resonated deeply with the population, who responded in droves to the recruitment drive. The image of the Prime Minister, with his stern gaze and outstretched hand, adds to the sense of urgency and gravity. The use of red and blue, the colours of the British flag, reinforces the patriotic message of the poster. The typography is clear and bold, making the words easy to read and memorable. Overall, this poster is a powerful example of how the government used persuasive language and imagery to mobilize the nation during wartime.
