EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of Sir John Orde (1751-1824), a British naval commander who rose to prominence during the late 18th century. Orde served in the Royal Navy for over four decades, earning the title of Vice-Admiral and commanding the prestigious White Squadron. Born in 1751, Orde entered the navy at a young age and quickly proved himself to be an able seaman. He saw action in numerous battles against the French and Spanish navies, including the Battle of Quiberon Bay in 1759, which is considered a turning point in the Seven Years' War. Orde's career continued to flourish under the leadership of Admiral Lord Howe, with whom he served during the American Revolutionary War. Together, they achieved a series of victories against the American and French forces, including the Battle of the Chesapeake in 1781. In 1794, Orde was appointed as the commander of the White Squadron, a position he held until his retirement from the navy in 1805. The White Squadron was a select group of ships that formed the personal escort for the monarch and the royal family. Orde's leadership and expertise were highly regarded, and he played a crucial role in protecting the British fleet during the Napoleonic Wars. This portrait, likely taken towards the end of Orde's career, captures the gravity and authority of this esteemed naval commander. His piercing gaze and impeccably dressed uniform convey a sense of confidence and determination, reflecting his impressive accomplishments and dedication to the British navy.
