EDITORS COMMENTS
An Unforgettable Champion: A Caricature of Captain A.F. Wilding in 1914 This caricature, created by the skilled hand of H.F. Crowther Smith, immortalizes the indomitable spirit of New Zealand's most celebrated tennis player, Anthony Frederick Wilding. Known as 'Captain' Wilding, he reigned supreme at Wimbledon from 1910 to 1913, winning the coveted Men's Singles title an impressive four times in a row. The year 1914 brought a new challenge for Wilding, as he faced the formidable Australian, Norman Brookes. The anticipation was high, with the world watching as these two tennis giants clashed on the hallowed grass courts of Wimbledon. Regrettably, this was the year Wilding's championship run came to an end, as Brookes triumphed in three straight sets. Despite the defeat, Wilding's spirit remained undeterred. With the outbreak of World War I, he answered the call to duty and enlisted in the British Army. Tragically, on May 9, 1915, during the Battle of Aubers Ridge, Captain Wilding lost his life. This poignant caricature, created in the year of his defeat to Brookes, serves as a poignant reminder of Wilding's unforgettable tennis career and his ultimate sacrifice for his country. The image captures the essence of a true sportsman, both on and off the court, whose legacy continues to inspire generations.
