EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of Haarlem, Holland, as the sun sets over the historic Grote Kerk or St. Balo Church, with the statue of Laurens Janszoon Coster standing proudly in the foreground. Laurens Janszoon Coster (1472-1544) is considered the inventor of the printing press in the Netherlands, making him a pivotal figure in the country's rich cultural history. The statue, located in the Grote Markt, was unveiled in 1992 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the invention of the printing press. The Grote Kerk, a stunning example of Gothic architecture, has stood since the 14th century and is a beloved landmark of Haarlem. The church's tall, pointed spire can be seen rising above the rooftops, casting long shadows over the cobblestone streets. The peaceful scene is a testament to the enduring legacy of these two important figures in Dutch history. The photograph, taken by Paul Brown for Mary Evans Picture Library in 2008, beautifully encapsulates the historical significance and picturesque charm of Haarlem.
