EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing photograph, taken in 1911, captures a moment during a Spiritualist séance led by Andrew Glendinning and James Robertson. The image, published in James Coates and Elliot O'Donnell's book "Photographing the Invisible: Practical Studies in Supernormal Photography, Script and Other Allied Phenomena" (Fowler, 1921), purports to show a spirit or apparition in the form of a floating head. Glendinning, a well-known Spiritualist medium, and Robertson, a photographer, were conducting a séance in which they attempted to capture evidence of the afterlife through photographic means. The darkened room is filled with a sense of anticipation as the sitters, some with their eyes closed in meditation, await the manifestation of the spirit world. The spirit, depicted as a disembodied head, hovers above the table, its ethereal features illuminated by the faint light of the room. Its eyes are closed, as if in deep contemplation, and its expression is serene and peaceful. The spirit's presence is further emphasized by the misty, otherworldly aura that surrounds it. The photograph, which has been the subject of much debate and controversy, is considered by some to be a genuine example of spiritual photography, while others dismiss it as a hoax. Regardless of one's beliefs, the image remains a fascinating and intriguing glimpse into the world of Spiritualism and the search for proof of life after death.
