EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts two magnificent Arabian horses, Hammon and Tajar, presented to Queen Victoria in the late 1840s. Hammon, a chestnut stallion, was bred in the prestigious stud of the King of Prussia at Trakehn and was gifted to the Queen by the monarch himself in 1844. Tajar, a bay stallion, was purchased by the Queen from Count Hatzfeld in 1844, having been reared at Twenark in Mecklenberg by Count Hahn. The horses are shown standing gracefully at one of the private entrances to Windsor Castle, the historic royal residence in England. The image captures the horses' elegant forms and the regal atmosphere of the castle, with its grand architecture and lush greenery. The photograph is a testament to the close relationship between the British monarchy and the Arabian horse breeding world during the 19th century. Queen Victoria was an avid horse enthusiast and owned a large number of Arabian horses throughout her reign. The presence of these two Arabian sires at Windsor Castle reflects the Queen's dedication to the breed and her appreciation for their beauty and athleticism. The photograph is estimated to date from around 1866, making it a valuable historical record of the Queen's equine collection during the Victorian era. The image provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the elegance and grandeur of the royal stables at Windsor Castle and the horses that graced them.
