EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph showcases two exquisite African butterflies: the Western blue-banded forester, Euphaedra eupalus (formerly known as Nymphalis erithonius), and the African giant skipper, Pyrrhochalcia iphis (formerly known as Hesperia iphis). The image, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, captures both the ventral and dorsal views of these captivating insects. The Western blue-banded forester, depicted in images 1 and 2, is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of approximately 7 centimeters. Its upper wings are a vibrant blue, with black bands and white spots. The underside of its wings is a mix of brown and orange, with black markings. This butterfly is native to West Africa and is known for its distinctive coloration, which helps it blend in with the forest floor. The African giant skipper, shown in images 3 and 4, is a much larger butterfly, with a wingspan of up to 12 centimeters. Its upper wings are a rich orange-brown color, with black markings and white spots. The underside of its wings is a pale orange-yellow, with black veins and white spots. This butterfly is found in the savannas and grasslands of Central and East Africa. These beautiful butterflies were expertly captured in this handcoloured lithograph, which showcases their intricate details and vibrant colors. The illustrations were produced during the 19th century, a time when the study of exotic insects was a popular scientific pursuit. Today, these butterflies continue to fascinate collectors and naturalists alike, and serve as a reminder of the incredible diversity of the natural world.
