EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts Tetratheca glandulosa, a species of red alga, also known as Corallina glandulosa or Cyclops glandulosus. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, under the direction of the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is celebrated as one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic skill. This illustration showcases his mastery, with the delicate textures and intricate patterns of the Tetratheca glandulosa rendered in stunning detail. The red alga is depicted in its natural habitat, surrounded by various marine organisms, including copepods, diaptomus, and staphylinus. These crustaceans were likely important members of the plankton community that lived among the Tetratheca glandulosa. The use of the copperplate stipple engraving technique allowed for a high level of detail and tonal range, resulting in a beautifully detailed and visually engaging image. The handcolouring adds an additional layer of vibrancy and depth, making this a truly remarkable representation of Tetratheca glandulosa and the marine ecosystem in which it thrives.
