EDITORS COMMENTS
The Unknown Warrior: A Tribute to the Fallen Heroes of World War I This full-page image from The Sphere, a special supplement published by Illustrated London News Ltd in 1920, pays tribute to the Unknown Warrior, a soldier whose identity remains unknown but whose sacrifice represents the countless lives lost during the First World War. The hauntingly beautiful illustration shows the Unknown Warrior lying in state at Westminster Abbey, surrounded by mourners and military personnel. The solemn atmosphere is heightened by the use of muted colors and the intricate details of the soldiers' uniforms and the architectural features of the abbey. The inscription at the bottom of the image reads, "Here lies one of the multitude who, in the conflict between the years 1914-1918, gave the most that man can give, life itself for God, for King and Country, for loved ones, right and freedom. They buried him among the kings because he was known unto God." The Unknown Warrior was interred in a tomb at Westminster Abbey on November 11, 1920, during a ceremony attended by thousands of mourners, including King George V and representatives from allied nations. The tomb remains a symbol of the sacrifices made during the war and a reminder of the human cost of conflict. This poignant image serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the millions of soldiers and civilians who lost their lives during World War I. It is a testament to the enduring power of art to capture the essence of historical moments and evoke emotions that resonate across generations.
