EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the facade of the Portman Arms pub in the heart of Marylebone, London, as it looked in the 1930s. The image, taken by an unknown photographer for Charrington and Company Limited, showcases the pub's distinctive red brick exterior and ornate signage, which proudly displays the name "Portman Arms." At the time this photograph was taken, the Portman Arms was a popular local watering hole for residents and workers in the area. However, its history is not without adversity. As the back of the print reveals, the pub was badly damaged during bombing raids in the early 1940s. Despite this setback, the Portman Arms was rebuilt and underwent several name changes over the decades, including Wood, Hennelys, and Hobgoblin, before eventually being renamed Sir John Balcombe. The Portman Arms, which is located at W1H 6HE, has been a fixture in the Marylebone community for many years, providing a welcoming space for locals to gather, socialize, and enjoy a pint. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the Portman Arms was known simply as the Portman Arms and was a cherished part of the local scene.
