EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 466, featuring the Broad Elophorus beetle, Helophorus rufipes, in its natural habitat. The beetle, previously known as Elophorus fennicus, is a member of the family Elasmosomatidae within the order Coleoptera. The intricately detailed illustration, produced during the 1820s to 1830s, showcases the beetle's distinctive features, including its elongated, flattened body and broadly expanded hind tibiae, which give it its common name. The Broad Elophorus can be found near the edges of ponds and slow-moving waters, where it feeds on the roots and stems of aquatic plants. In this illustration, the beetle is depicted perched atop the tassel pondweed, Ruppia cirrhosa, a common submerged plant in shallow freshwater environments. The delicate, feathery structures of the pondweed contrast starkly with the robust form of the beetle, highlighting the intricacies of the natural world. John Curtis, FLS, was a prominent English naturalist and entomologist who dedicated his life to the study and documentation of insects. His comprehensive work, Curtis's British Entomology, was one of the most significant contributions to the field during the 19th century, featuring over 3,000 meticulously detailed plates. This plate, illustrating the Broad Elophorus beetle, is a testament to Curtis's unwavering commitment to accurately recording the natural world for future generations.
