EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving showcases the vibrant and captivating Crimson Topaz, also known as the Topaza Pella or the Crimson-collared Woodnymph (Trochilus pella). The image is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, specifically the volume dedicated to Hummingbirds, published in Edinburgh by W.H. Lizars in 1833. The meticulous detail and rich colors of this illustration highlight the unique features of this small, iridescent hummingbird. The Crimson Topaz is native to Central and South America, and is easily recognizable by the brilliant red coloration on its chest and belly, contrasting with its green back and wings. The male's head and throat are adorned with a collar of white feathers, while the female has a more subdued, greenish-yellow belly. Hummingbirds are known for their extraordinary ability to hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings, which can beat up to 80 times per second. They are also the only group of birds that are able to fly in all directions, including backwards. The Crimson Topaz feeds primarily on nectar from flowers, using its long, curved beak to reach deep into the blooms. This beautiful illustration is a testament to the natural history artistry of the 19th century, and provides a glimpse into the natural world of hummingbirds, showcasing their stunning beauty and unique characteristics.
