EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured engraving depicts the majestic Alpine ibex, Capra ibex, a wild goat species native to the European Alps. The image is taken from Edward Griffiths' publication, "The Animal Kingdom" by the renowned naturalist, Baron Georges Cuvier, published in London by Whittaker in 1827. The Alpine ibex is a ruminant, meaning it chews its cud, and is characterized by its distinctive curved horns, which can grow up to 1 meter in length. These agile animals are well adapted to their mountainous habitat, with strong limbs and sure-footedness that allow them to navigate steep and rocky terrain. The Alpine ibex was an important species in European natural history, as it was one of the first wild goats to be described scientifically. Cuvier's detailed observation and documentation of the species contributed significantly to the understanding of its biology and distribution in the Alps. The engraving accurately portrays the animal's physical features, including its shaggy coat, which provides insulation in the cold alpine climate. The Alpine ibex population declined significantly in the 19th and 20th centuries due to hunting and habitat loss. However, conservation efforts have led to a recovery of their numbers in many areas, and they are now classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. Today, the Alpine ibex remains an iconic symbol of the European Alps and a source of inspiration for naturalists and wildlife enthusiasts around the world.
