EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic Britannia Public House, located in the vibrant Borough area of London. The image showcases the pub's left facade, adorned with ornate architectural details and the distinctive sign of Britannia, the Roman goddess of the sea, holding a trident. The pub, a cherished local institution, was once a popular gathering place for residents and visitors alike. The Britannia Public House, owned by Hoare & Company Limited, was a beloved pub in Borough, London, with a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. The photograph, taken before its demolition in July 2018, serves as a poignant reminder of the pub's former glory. The back of the print includes the address of the pub, SE1 0DG, for those who may have fond memories of the place. The Britannia Public House was not affiliated with the Britannia Brewing Company, despite the similarity in names. This photograph is an invaluable record of a once-thriving local establishment that has since been lost to the passage of time. The National Brewery Heritage Trust has preserved this image for future generations to appreciate the history and character of London's pubs and the role they play in shaping the city's cultural landscape.
