Lord Kitchener in Khartoum, Sudan: Revisiting His Great Victory at the Battle of Omdurman In this evocative photograph, taken circa 1913, Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, Viscount Kitchener of Khartoum, stands proudly amongst local Sudanese troops in the heart of Khartoum, the capital city of Sudan. The scene is a poignant reminder of Kitchener's historic victory at the Battle of Omdurman, which took place on September 2, 1898. Kitchener, who served as the Sirdar (Commander-in-Chief) of the Egyptian Army at the time, led the British forces to a decisive victory against the Mahdist forces of the Sudanese leader, Abdullahi ibn Muhammad. The battle, which took place near the city of Omdurman, marked the end of the Mahdist War and the restoration of British control over Sudan.
