EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the LCC-LFB Cannon Street fire station in the City of London in the early 1920s. The fire station, which opened in 1906, is seen here with three motorised fire appliances lined up on the forecourt. The era of horse-drawn fire engines had come to an end, though the last horse-drawn fire engine, a TL, would not be retired until 1921. The brick and red-tiled building with its distinctive chimney and large bay windows served as a vital hub for firefighting services in the heart of the city. The vehicles, with their polished brass fittings and red bodies, are housed in the station sheds, ready for immediate deployment. Firemen in their uniforms and helmets can be seen in the background, preparing for their next call. The image offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the transition from horse-drawn to motorised fire appliances and the evolution of firefighting services in London. This photograph is part of the rich history of the London Fire Brigade and serves as a reminder of the important role fire stations like Cannon Street played in protecting the city and its people.
