EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the iconic De Lesseps statue, sculpted by Emmanuel Fremiet et, standing proudly at the entrance of the Suez Canal in Port Said, Egypt. The statue, depicting Ferdinand de Lesseps, the visionary French diplomat and engineer who initiated the construction of the Suez Canal Company in 1859, invites seafarers and travelers with an open gesture towards the canal. The Suez Canal, an engineering marvel of its time, shortened the maritime route between Europe and the Far East by approximately 7,000 kilometers, reducing the travel time significantly. The canal, which operated under the Suez Canal Company until the 1950s, allowed for the seamless passage of boats and ships from the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, revolutionizing global trade and travel. The statue, erected in 1899, stood at the entrance of the Suez Canal in Port Said until 1956. It was later moved to a small shipyard in Port Fouad, the twin city on the eastern bank of the canal. This photograph, taken circa 1930, captures the grandeur and historical significance of the statue and the canal it guards. The boats and sailing vessels in the background add to the serene and picturesque scene, making this an evocative snapshot of a bygone era.
