EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative pencil drawing, titled 'Led along the street in a long string of horses,' is an illustration from Moyra Charlton's book 'Three White Stockings - Chapter V,' published in 1933. The image captures the moment as a young Captain Gilbert Holiday, a native of St. Johns Wood, watches from his window as a long line of horses are led down the street. Holiday's early life was steeped in the world of horses, with the Royal Horse Artillery providing his first introduction to these magnificent animals. Born in 1879, Holiday received his education at Westminster and went on to study at the Royal Academy Schools. He later worked as an illustrator for various publications, including The Graphic, The Tatler, and The Illustrated London News. As a soldier in the Royal Field Artillery during the First World War, Holiday gained firsthand experience with horses on the Western Front. He painted many pictures for army messes, capturing the essence of military life and the beauty of the horses that served alongside the soldiers. This drawing, with its intricate details and sense of movement, offers a glimpse into Holiday's world and his deep connection to horses. The image is a testament to the artist's skill and his ability to capture the spirit of a bygone era.
