Jamaica: A Panoramic View from the Arsenal at Port Royal, Circa 1938 This lantern slide depicts a breathtaking panorama of the Jamaican coastline, specifically the view from the Arsenal at Port Royal. The image transports us back in time to the early 20th century, offering a glimpse into the rich history of this Caribbean island nation. Port Royal, located at the end of the Palisadoes and the mouth of Kingston Harbour in south-eastern Jamaica, was founded in 1518 and served as the center of shipping commerce in the Caribbean Sea during the latter half of the 17th century. The city's strategic location made it a thriving hub for trade and economic activity. However, Port Royal's prosperity was not to last. In 1692, a devastating earthquake struck the city, followed by subsequent fires, hurricanes, and flooding. The disaster left the city in ruins, and it was not until 1907 that another earthquake hit, further damaging the already decimated town. Despite its tumultuous past, Jamaica continues to captivate visitors with its natural beauty and vibrant culture. Officially known as the Commonwealth of Jamaica, this island nation is located in the Greater Antilles, south of Cuba and west of Hispaniola. The photograph, part of the Boswell Collection, Slide number 49, offers a unique perspective of Jamaica's history and serves as a reminder of the island's resilient spirit. Date: Circa 1938
