EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the groundbreaking reconstruction of the Iguanodon, an iconic dinosaur discovered in the Early Cretaceous period, by the pioneering English naturalist Gideon Mantell. Dating back to the 19th century, this illustration offers a glimpse into the early understanding of these prehistoric creatures. The Iguanodon, an herbivorous dinosaur from the Iguanodontidae family, is shown in a bipedal stance, a feature that was a significant departure from earlier beliefs that dinosaurs were reptiles that moved on all fours. The dinosaur's name, derived from the Greek words for "iguana" and "tooth," reflects its resemblance to the modern-day iguana, with its long, sharp teeth and elongated thumb spike. The Iguanodon inhabited the lush, wetlands and forests of Europe during the late Cretaceous period, around 133 to 130 million years ago. This reconstruction, with its intricate details and anatomical accuracy, showcases Mantell's innovative approach to understanding the anatomy and behavior of these extinct creatures. As part of the larger group Archosauria, the Iguanodon shares characteristics with modern reptiles, such as a diapsid skull and a backbone made up of vertebrae. However, it also exhibits distinct dinosaurian features, including ankylopollexia, a condition where the lower limbs are fused to the pelvis, and a long, rigid tail for balance and support. Gideon Algernon Mantell, a self-taught naturalist, made significant contributions to the study of dinosaurs, identifying several important fossils and proposing the existence of dinosaurs as a distinct group of animals. This Iguanodon reconstruction is a testament to his groundbreaking work and the early beginnings of dinosaur paleontology.
