EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Greater Amberjack, Seriola dumerili, a vibrant and powerful marine fish native to the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The illustration is taken from Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The artwork was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The Greater Amberjack is identified by its elongated body, large pectoral and dorsal fins, and distinctive lateral line. Its scales are large and shimmering, reflecting the light in a beautiful display of iridescence. The fish is shown here in its natural habitat, surrounded by the intricate patterns of the ocean floor. The engraving was executed by the skilled hands of Massard, under the direction of Turpin, using the stipple technique. This method involved applying ink to the plate with a series of tiny stipples, creating a textured and detailed image. The resulting artwork is a testament to the artistry and dedication of the naturalists and artists of the time, who sought to document and preserve the natural world for future generations. The Greater Amberjack is a highly prized game fish, known for its strength and agility. It is also an important food source in many coastal communities. Today, this magnificent fish continues to inspire awe and admiration, both for its beauty and its role in the marine ecosystem.
