EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of tension and uncertainty as German cavalry charge towards a farm in the small French village of Sailly-Sallisel during the early days of the First World War. The Western Front, specifically the Somme region, was the scene of some of the most brutal and costly battles of the war, with both sides attempting to gain ground through a relentless barrage of artillery and infantry attacks. In this image, we see a group of German horsemen, their faces set with determination and focus, as they approach the farmstead. The horses, their coats glistening with sweat and mud, seem to sense the danger ahead, their ears pricked and eyes wide. In the background, the rolling hills of the French countryside stretch out, dotted with trees and farm buildings, a stark contrast to the chaos and destruction unfolding in the foreground. The use of cavalry in the First World War was becoming increasingly obsolete, as the trench warfare and machine gun fire made it nearly impossible for horses to advance effectively. Yet, despite this, the German military continued to employ cavalry charges in an attempt to disrupt enemy lines and gain surprise attacks. The charge at Sailly-Sallisel, which took place on August 25, 1914, was one such attempt, but ultimately proved unsuccessful as the German forces were repelled by the French infantry. This powerful photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers and horses involved in the First World War, as well as the futility of certain military tactics in the face of new and devastating weapons of war.
