EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, signed by the renowned London artist William Henry Barribal, depicts a scene from Basil Hood's adaptation of The Count of Luxembourg, performed at the New Theatre in Aberdare on 3rd February 1913. In this image, taken from Act II, we find ourselves in the grand reception hall of Grand Duke Rutzinov, where the impoverished Count, enthralled by the beautiful Adele, begins to descend the ornate staircase. Their eyes meet, and the spark of an unexpected love connection ignites between them. However, as the story unfolds, they come to the shocking realization that they are already married. This delightful plotline, reminiscent of the popular tale Dear Love, was a common theme in early 20th-century theatre. The elegant dancers and dapper gentlemen in the background add to the opulence and allure of this moment. Barribal's masterful use of color and detail brings this enchanting scene to life, transporting us back in time to the world of grand dukes, countesses, and unexpected romance.
