EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the chaos and intensity of the Battle of Courgies on August 25, 1914, during the early stages of World War I, Corporal A.H. Wilkins of the 2nd Life Guards distinguished himself with an act of bravery that would go down in military history. As the British forces faced off against the German army, Wilkins, portrayed here by artist George Derville Rowlandson, fearlessly extracted a wounded man from beneath his own fallen horse, all the while under enemy fire. The man, pinned under the horse, was in grave danger, and Wilkins' quick thinking and unwavering courage saved his life. For his conspicuous gallantry during this harrowing moment, Corporal Wilkins was later awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM), an honor bestowed upon British and Commonwealth soldiers for acts of valor in the face of the enemy. This powerful image, taken from the pages of "Deeds That Thrill The Empire," captures the raw emotion and heroism of the First World War battlefield, and serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary soldiers like Corporal Wilkins. With his horse rearing up and hooves kicking, the scene is one of both danger and determination, encapsulating the spirit of the 1st Great Military Topographical Regiments and the unyielding courage of those who served during the Great War.
