EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite marble sculpture, known as the Cnidian Aphrodite or the Venus of Cnidus, is a Roman copy of the original Greek masterpiece created by Praxiteles in the 4th century BC. The Greek original was discovered on the island of Cnidus in Asia Minor in 1828 and is now housed in the British Museum in London. This Roman copy, dating from the 2nd century AD, is part of the extensive collection at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, Denmark. The sculpture depicts Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, in a moment of intimate reflection. She is shown in a state of undress, her body turned slightly away from the viewer, revealing her voluptuous form. The broken right arm, which once held a mirror, adds an air of mystery and allure to the figure. The intricate details of the marble, from the delicate folds of her drapery to the subtle textures of her skin, demonstrate the masterful craftsmanship of the ancient artist. The face of Aphrodite is serene and thoughtful, her expression inviting the viewer to contemplate the beauty and allure of the goddess. The sculpture is a testament to the enduring power of Greek art and the influence it had on the Roman world. The Cnidian Aphrodite is a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of ancient Greece and the classical era, a time when art and beauty were celebrated and revered.
