Cheer, Boys! Cheer

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a classic melodrama first produced at the prestigious Drury Lane Theatre in London on September 19, 1895. The play, written by Sir Augustus Harris in collaboration with Cecil Raleigh and Henry Hamilton, was a popular success and dealt with military exploits in Matabeleland, Zimbabwe. The image you see here is a print of the play's theatrical poster from 1914, during a revival of the production at the Princes Theatre. The outbreak of World War I prompted the revival of "Cheer, Boys! Cheer," as its themes of courage and patriotism resonated with the British public in the face of the global conflict. The play ran for only 33 performances, but its impact was significant. The reverse of the print bears a stirring verse by Henry Russell, adding to the sense of excitement and heroism that the production no doubt conveyed on stage. The artists signature, "S. Brimult," is also visible in the bottom right corner. The image captures the essence of the melodrama genre, with its bold typography, dramatic pose of the figure in the foreground, and evocative use of color. The setting, with its African landscape and military uniforms, further emphasizes the play's connection to the colonial era and the British military tradition. Overall, this print is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the theatrical world of late Victorian London and the enduring appeal of melodrama.
