This photograph captures Lord Charles William Beresford (1846-1893), an esteemed British naval officer of Irish descent. Born as Charles William de la Poer Beresford in Ireland, he rose through the ranks of the Royal Navy to become a prominent figure in maritime history. Lord Beresford's naval career began in 1855 when he joined the HMS Britannia, the training ship of the Royal Navy. Over the next few decades, he distinguished himself in various naval engagements, including the Crimean War and the Zulu War. He was knighted in 1885 for his bravery during the Battle of Rorke's Drift. In 1893, Lord Beresford was appointed as the Second Sea Lord and a member of the Admiralty, one of the most senior positions in the Royal Navy. He held this position until his retirement in 1895. This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, showcases Lord Beresford in his full naval uniform, complete with medals and decorations.
