Charadrius vociferus, commonly known as the Killdeer, is depicted in this stunning hand-coloured aquatint plate from John James Audubon's "Birds of America." This exquisite illustration, plate number 225, was engraved, printed, and coloured by R. Havell (& Son) in London between 1834 and 1835. The intricate details of the Killdeer's wings, with their distinctive black and white stripes, are beautifully rendered, as are the vibrant red hues of its legs and bill. The Killdeer is a wader and plover found in open country throughout North and South America. Known for their distinctive call, which sounds like a killed deer, they are often mistaken for being injured to lure predators away from their nests. This bird is shown in flight, with its long, pointed tail streamers fanned out behind it. The Killdeer is a member of the Charadriiformes order, a group of birds that includes gulls, terns, and sandpipers. The Sauropsida classification system, which groups reptiles and birds together, was emerging during Audubon's time, and the Killdeer, along with other birds, was being recognized as a member of this group. The illustration captures the Killdeer in its natural habitat, outside, during daytime hours. The meticulous attention to detail and the lifelike quality of this illustration are a testament to the skill and artistry of Audubon and his team.
