EDITORS COMMENTS
Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII of England, is depicted in this stunning 16th-century portrait. Born on December 16, 1485, in Alcala de Henares, Spain, Catherine was the daughter of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, the renowned Catholic Monarchs. This royal lineage made Catherine an attractive match for the English throne, and she was married to Arthur, Prince of Wales, in 1501, at the age of 15. However, Arthur's untimely death in 1502 left Catherine a widow at a young age. Five years later, she married Henry VIII, then the Duke of York, in 1509. Catherine's marriage to Henry was a significant one, as she was the mother of six of Henry's children, including the future Queen Mary I and Prince Edward VI. Despite her status as queen, Catherine's marriage to Henry became a source of conflict. Henry became infatuated with Anne Boleyn, and in 1527, he began an affair with her, which led to Catherine being accused of adultery and her eventual downfall. In 1533, Catherine was formally divorced from Henry, and Anne Boleyn became his new queen. Catherine's fall from grace was a tumultuous one. She was imprisoned in the Tower of London and was eventually charged with treason. Catherine was beheaded on February 13, 1536, at the age of 50, marking the end of an era in English history. This portrait of Catherine of Aragon is a poignant reminder of her life and her role as the first wife of Henry VIII. The intricate details of her clothing and the regal expression on her face convey the dignity and grace of this remarkable woman, who left an indelible mark on English history.
