EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, showcases two fascinating marine species native to the Caribbean Sea: the Caribbean moonfish, Selene brownii, and the doctorfish, Acanthurus chirurgus. The illustration was created by the skilled artist Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was renowned for his work as a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Caribbean moonfish, also known as the moon jellyfish angelfish, is depicted gracefully swimming among the waves, its translucent body shimmering in the moonlight. Its elongated, slender body is adorned with iridescent spots and stripes, making it a captivating sight underwater. Accompanying the moonfish is the doctorfish, a vibrant and distinctive tropical reef dweller. With its distinctive stripes and a prominent black spot above its pectoral fin, the doctorfish is easily recognizable. Its name derives from its role as a "doctor" to other reef inhabitants, as it is known to remove parasites from the bodies of other fish. This stunning engraving, illustrated by J.G. Pretre and engraved by Massard under the direction of Turpin, is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of natural history illustrations during the early 19th century. The stipple technique used in this engraving allowed for the creation of delicate textures and shading, resulting in a lifelike representation of these fascinating Caribbean species.
