EDITORS COMMENTS
Witnessing the Beginning of Life: A Bottlenose Dolphin Birth at Oltremare Lagoon, Riccione, Italy In the crystal-clear waters of Oltremare Lagoon in Riccione, Italy, a remarkable event unfolded on July 2, 2010, as a new life began its journey in the world of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). The pregnancy, which lasted 54 weeks, came to an end as Blue, a 14-year-old female bottlenose dolphin, began the labor process. Blue, who was born in Delphinarium Rimini, Italy, in 1996, displayed the strength and determination of a mother-to-be as she prepared to bring her calf into the world. As the tail of the newborn dolphin emerged, it marked the beginning of a new life filled with curiosity, exploration, and the joy of discovery. The male calf, whose father was Micha, a 25-year-old bottlenose dolphin from Cuba who had been in Italy since 1989, entered the world weighing roughly 16 kg and measuring 120 cm in length. The first hours of the calf's life were dedicated to bonding with its mother and taking in the essential nutrients it needed to thrive. Within just 2 and a half hours of birth, the calf began to take milk from Blue, feeding at an average of two to three times per hour. Over the next 20 days, the calf's weight more than doubled, reaching 31 kg. This moment in the life cycle of bottlenose dolphins serves as a reminder of the beauty and wonder of nature, even in captivity. As we witness the beginning of this new life, we are reminded of the importance of preserving the natural habitats and populations of these magnificent creatures, ensuring their continued survival for future generations to marvel at their grace and intelligence.
