EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of care and compassion in the C Ward of Quex Park Hospital during World War I. The ward, situated in the unfinished galleries of Quex Park Museum in Birchington, Kent, was run by the Kent/178, Birchington Detachment, and provided medical care, rehabilitation, and recuperation for fifteen Belgian patients and three Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurses. The VADs, members of the Westgate Detachment Kent/64, are seen here in their uniforms, two of them wearing armbands of the Order of St John. The hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919, during which time it played a vital role in providing medical assistance to wounded soldiers and civilians from the conflict. The Commandant of the hospital was Hannah Powell-Cotton, wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. The serene atmosphere of the ward, with its sea view, offers a poignant reminder of the humanitarian efforts that took place during this turbulent time in history.
