The Ashanti War, also known as the Anglo-Ashanti War, was a significant conflict between the Ashanti people, led by their King Asantehene, and the British, who sought to secure access to the West Coast of Africa for trade and political dominance. The war began in January 1873 when the British, led by Sir Garnet Wolseley, invaded Ashanti territory. The Ashanti resistance was fierce, and the two sides engaged in numerous battles, including this one depicted in the photograph. The Ashanti warriors, armed with muskets and spears, fought valiantly against the British soldiers' superior firepower. Despite the Ashanti's bravery, the British eventually emerged victorious, and the Ashanti Kingdom was brought under British control.
