Thomas Wood, The Abstemious Miller, 1821. Creator: Robert Cooper

Thomas Wood, The Abstemious Miller, 1821. Portrait of miller Thomas Wood (1719-1783), made c1773 when he was 53 years old. Wood, of Billericay in Essex, became known for his weight-loss diet which he adopted after a life of excess. He had become extremely overweight and suffered numerous health problems, and was recommended a book by Luigi Cornaro, a 17th century Italian dietician. Wood subsequently gave up meat, alcohol and animal fat, and ate only a pudding made from seabiscuits. His health was restored, and it is thought that he lost between ten and eleven stone in weight. From " Wonderful Characters: Comprising Memoirs and Anecdotes of the Most Remarkable Persons of Every Age and Nation", Vol. I, by Henry Wilson. [J. Robins and Co. Albion Press, London, 1821]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intriguing figure of Thomas Wood, The Abstemious Miller, in 1821. Painted by Robert Cooper around 1773 when Wood was 53 years old, this portrait showcases a man who underwent a remarkable transformation. Hailing from Billericay in Essex, Wood had led a life of excess that resulted in severe health issues and excessive weight gain. However, everything changed for Wood when he stumbled upon a book by Luigi Cornaro, an Italian dietician from the 17th century. Inspired by Cornaro's teachings, Wood made the decision to completely overhaul his diet and lifestyle. He bid farewell to meat, alcohol, and animal fat while embracing a peculiar pudding made from seabiscuits as his sole sustenance. The results were astounding - not only did Wood regain his health but he also shed between ten and eleven stone (approximately 140-154 pounds). This incredible feat earned him fame as The Abstemious Miller. Captured in full length detail within this engraving is the resolute expression on Wood's face; it reflects both determination and triumph over adversity. His story serves as an inspiration to all those seeking personal transformation through discipline and self-control. Preserved within the pages of Henry Wilson's "Wonderful Characters: Comprising Memoirs and Anecdotes of the Most Remarkable Persons of Every Age and Nation" this portrait immortalizes Thomas Wood's extraordinary journey towards better health against all odds.
