Schleswig-Holstein War - Burning of the Lesser Camp, at Kochendorf, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Schleswig-Holstein War - Burning of the Lesser Camp, at Kochendorf, 1850. "The heavy firing at Eckernforde, to the east, continued after nightfall; it is said it was only intended to check the advance of the Holstein infantry on the town while the Danish troops were embarked in their ships and boats and taken across the bay, but I cannot answer positively for what I did not see. A mill behind the town was set on fire, and burnt for many hours. It is reported this morning that Eckernforde is in possession of the Holsteiners, but it is a question if they can hold it, as they are always open to an attack from the water". From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the aftermath of the Burning of the Lesser Camp at Kochendorf during the Schleswig-Holstein War in 1850. The exact creator of this engraving remains unknown, but it was published in the Illustrated London News, a prominent Victorian-era newspaper. The scene portrays the destruction caused by the advancing Holstein forces, who set fire to a mill behind Eckernforde as they laid siege to the town. The heavy artillery fire continued into the night, with the intention of preventing the Danish troops from reinforcing their position. The Danish forces were in the process of evacuating Eckernforde by sea, leaving the Holsteiners to take control of the town. However, their possession of Eckernforde was uncertain due to the constant threat of attack from the water. The mill, now engulfed in flames, burned for hours, adding to the devastation on the battlefield. The strategic importance of controlling Eckernford lay in its access to a vital water supply, including a water well, which was essential for both sides during the conflict. This engraving offers a glimpse into the intense and destructive nature of 19th-century warfare. The image captures the chaos and uncertainty of the battlefield, with men from both sides locked in a brutal struggle for control. The smoke rising from the burning mill serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of war and the lives disrupted by the conflict.
