Napoleon Bonaparte (1721-1818) dissolving the Council of Five Hundred, 1845. Napoleon enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks of the French Revolutionary army. In 1799 he led a coup to overthrow the government, the Directory, and became first consul and effective dictator of France. In 1812, however, Napoleon embarked on a disastrous invasion of Russia and defeat at Leipzig in 1813 led to his abdication and exile to Elba. He ecaped in 1815, raised another army, but was finally defeated by Wellington at Waterloo, and was exiled again to St Helena, where he died

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in history - Napoleon Bonaparte dissolving the Council of Five Hundred. Created by S Freeman, Auguste Raffet, and featuring the iconic figure himself, this artwork transports us back to 1845. Napoleon Bonaparte's rise to power was nothing short of extraordinary. From his humble beginnings in the French Revolutionary army, he quickly climbed the ranks and orchestrated a coup that toppled the government. As first consul and later Emperor of France, he embarked on a series of military campaigns across Europe known as the Napoleonic Wars. In this particular scene, we witness Napoleon asserting his authority amidst political unrest. Surrounded by armed soldiers and with a rifle in hand, he stands resolute against a crowd representing disagreement within the Council. The intensity is palpable as emotions run high. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to this engraving while emphasizing its historical significance. It serves as a reminder of both Napoleon's ambition and his ultimate downfall. Despite achieving great victories such as Austerlitz and Jena, his ill-fated invasion of Russia led to defeat at Leipzig and subsequent exile.
