Mr. J. W. Larnach, 1911. Creator: Unknown
Mr. J.W. Larnach, 1911. Portrait of racehorse owner James Larnach who in 1894 bought the mare Pilgrimage, winner of the 1000 and 2000 Guineas in 1878, for 160 guineas, believing her to be barren. It was a great surprise when the 19-year-old mare gave birth the following Spring to a colt foal by Janissary, which Larnach named Jeddah. In 1898 Jeddah became the first horse to win The Derby at odds of 100/1. He went on to win the Prince of Waless Stakes at Royal Ascot. From " British Sports and Sportsmen: Racing Coursing and Steeplechasing", Part II, edited by William Scarth Dixon. [1911]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Mr. J. W. Larnach, a prominent figure in the world of horse racing during the early 20th century. The portrait captures the essence of this distinguished racehorse owner, who made an unexpected discovery that would forever change his life. In 1894, Larnach purchased a mare named Pilgrimage for a mere 160 guineas, believing her to be barren. However, much to his astonishment, the 19-year-old mare gave birth to a colt foal by Janissary the following Spring. This remarkable turn of events led Larnach to name the young colt Jeddah. Against all odds and at incredible betting odds of 100/1, Jeddah went on to make history by winning The Derby in 1898 - an extraordinary achievement that solidified both Larnach's reputation as a shrewd racehorse breeder and Jeddah's place in equestrian folklore. The photograph is featured in "British Sports and Sportsmen: Racing Coursing and Steeplechasing" edited by William Scarth Dixon in 1911. It offers us a glimpse into Edwardian Britain's passion for horse racing while immortalizing James Larnach as he gazes confidently into the camera lens. This image serves as a testament not only to Larnach's success but also to the enduring allure of horseracing as one of Britain's most beloved sports.
