John Cabell Breckinridge, Confederate general, 1862-1867. Artist: J Rogers

John Cabell Breckinridge, Confederate general, 1862-1867. Before the Civil War Breckinridge (1821-1875) served as the 14th Vice-President of the United States, the youngest holder of that office. He ran, unsuccessfully, for President in the 1860 election. After serving in both the western and eastern theatres in the war, he was appointed Conferate Secretary of War in 1865, a post he held until the conflict ended. Fearing charges of treason he fled into exile, but returned to the US in 1869 after being granted an amnesty. An engraving from volume III of The War with the South : a History of the Late Rebellion, by Robert Tomes, Benjamin G Smith, New York, Virtue & Yorston, 3 Volumes, 1862-1867

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of John Cabell Breckinridge, a prominent figure in American history. Serving as both a Confederate general and the 14th Vice-President of the United States, Breckinridge's life was filled with political ambition and military service. Before the Civil War erupted, Breckinridge held the distinction of being the youngest person to ever hold the office of Vice-President. However, his bid for presidency in 1860 proved unsuccessful. As war broke out, he played an active role on both western and eastern fronts before assuming the position of Confederate Secretary of War in 1865. Fearing potential charges of treason, Breckinridge sought exile but eventually returned to his homeland after receiving amnesty in 1869. This portrait showcases him donning a military uniform with a distinguished moustache adorning his face – symbols that reflect his dedication to serving his country. The monochrome engraving from "The War with the South: A History of Late Rebellion" by Robert Tomes and Benjamin G Smith provides us with an intimate glimpse into this influential man's life during one of America's darkest periods. It serves as a reminder not only of Breckinridge's significant contributions but also highlights how individuals can be shaped by their circumstances and choices during times of conflict.
