Handing over the Flag to the Expeditionary Troops, Madagascar, 1883-1896
Handing over the Flag to the Expeditionary Troops, Madagascar, 1883-1896. France invaded Madagascar in 1883 in what became known as the first Franco-Hova War (Hova being the name of the islands Merina aristocrats), seeking to restore property that had been confiscated from French residents. Prior to the French intervention Madagascar was an independent kingdom ruled by the Merina dynasty, but after the war, increasing French interference meant another war broke out in 1895. By the end of the Second Franco-Hova War in 1896 France ruled the island as a protectorate, the monarchy had been abolished and the royal family exiled to Algeria

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the Handing over the Flag to the Expeditionary Troops in Madagascar, during the years 1883-1896. France's invasion of Madagascar marked the beginning of what is now known as the first Franco-Hova War. The conflict arose from France's desire to reclaim property that had been taken from French residents on the island. Before French intervention, Madagascar was an independent kingdom ruled by the Merina dynasty. However, as French interference increased, tensions escalated and another war erupted in 1895. This lithograph depicts a ceremony where a flag is being handed over to soldiers representing France's expeditionary troops. By 1896, at the conclusion of the Second Franco-Hova War, Madagascar had become a French protectorate. The monarchy was abolished and members of the royal family were exiled to Algeria. The image showcases men dressed in military attire standing proudly with their flags held high against a backdrop that represents colonialism and imperialism. It serves as a reminder of how European powers sought control over African territories during this era. Preserved through art media by AccuSoft Inc. , this print provides us with valuable insight into an important chapter in both Malagasy and French history. It invites contemplation about themes such as power dynamics between nations, cultural assimilation, and resistance within colonized regions like Africa during the nineteenth century.
