This photograph captures Sigurd Leeder, a renowned dancer and choreographer, as he teaches a class at the Folkwangschule Essen in Germany, in the year 1930. Leeder is shown instructing his students in the intricacies of Rudolf Laban's icosahedron, a revolutionary system of dance notation that allowed for the precise recording and analysis of movement. Laban's icosahedron was based on the idea that all movements could be broken down into thirty-three basic shapes, which were represented by the twenty triangular faces of an icosahedron. By mapping these shapes onto the body, dancers could notate and communicate complex choreography in a clear and precise way. Leeder, who was a close collaborator of Laban, is depicted here in the midst of demonstrating a 'slant in space,' one of the thirty-three basic movements. He is shown with his arms extended, his body twisted at an angle, and his gaze fixed intently on his students.
