Aeronautica Macchi C. 202 Folgore, 1940s. Creator: Macchi S. A

Single-seat, single-engine, low-wing monoplane fighter of all-metal monocoque construction; retractable, tailwheel-type landing gear. Virtually unknown outside Italy, the C.202 Folgore was the best fighter airplane fielded in significant numbers by the Regia Aeronautica (Italian Royal Air Force or RA) during World War II. This airplane demonstrated that Italy could design and build fighter aircraft to world-class standards. Aeronautica Macchi S. p. A. designed and built the Folgore (Lightning), which was based on an earlier Macchi design powered by a radial engine, the C.200 Saeta (Thunderbolt). Italy was a significant air-faring nation during the mid-1930s but its aviation industry began to lag late in the decade, particularly in engine development. No indigenous, in-line powerplant of sufficient power was available when the war started so early in 1940 Macchi had to import the German engine as a private venture. The results were impressive. Flat out, the Folgore was almost 97 kph (60 mph) faster than the Saetas speed of 502 kph (312 mph)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Aeronautica Macchi C. 202 Folgore, a remarkable fighter aircraft from the 1940s. Created by Macchi S. A. , this single-seat, single-engine monoplane fighter was constructed with an all-metal monocoque design and featured retractable, tailwheel-type landing gear. Although relatively unknown outside of Italy, the C. 202 Folgore proved to be the Italian Royal Air Force's (Regia Aeronautica) most formidable fighter plane during World War II. It demonstrated that Italy possessed the ability to design and manufacture world-class aircraft. The Aeronautica Macchi S. p. A. , drawing inspiration from their earlier radial engine-powered design called the C. 200 Saeta (Thunderbolt), developed and built this lightning-fast machine known as "Folgore" or "Lightning". During the mid-1930s, Italy held significant prominence in aviation; however, its industry began to lag behind in engine development towards the end of that decade. Consequently, when war broke out in 1940, Macchi had no choice but to import a German engine for this project as a private venture. The outcome was truly impressive - with a top speed of approximately 97 kph (60 mph) faster than its predecessor Saeta's speed of 502 kph (312 mph). This photograph not only captures the sleek beauty of this exceptional aircraft but also symbolizes Italy's resilience and ingenuity in producing such high-performance fighters during challenging times.
