EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Temple of Bel, also known as the Temple of Baal, which once stood proudly in Palmyra, Syria. A symbol of ancient history and religious devotion, this stone ruin was consecrated to the revered Mesopotamian god Bel. Alongside the lunar god Aglibol and the sun god Yarhibol, it formed a sacred triad that held great significance for worshippers in Palmyra. Dedicated in 32 AD, this temple served as the heart of religious life in Palmyra for centuries. Its ruins were renowned for their exceptional preservation and offered a glimpse into a bygone era. However, tragedy struck when militant groups ravaged these precious remnants in August 2015 during the Syrian civil war. The destruction inflicted upon this UNESCO World Heritage Site sent shockwaves through both local communities and global observers alike. It stands as a painful reminder of not only the crisis faced by Syria but also the loss suffered by humanity's shared cultural heritage. Through Stefania Besca's lens, we are reminded of both the beauty that once graced Palmyra's landscape and its tragic fate at the hands of conflict. This thought-provoking image serves as a testament to our collective responsibility to protect and preserve our world's historical treasures from such devastation.
