Iona Abbey

6th August 1955: The Abbey on the tiny island of Iona, begun in 1203 and neglected after the Reformation, which is being rebuilt by members of the Iona Community. The Iona Community is a Christian settlement run by a group of Scottish ministers who offer religion to factory workers and people living in the poorer areas of Glasgow. Their head office is in the city but they all visit Iona for three months of the year to train new recruits and gather people together for a Christian camp. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of Iona Abbey, situated on a small island off the coast of Scotland. Taken on 6th August 1955 by Maurice Ambler for Picture Post, this image showcases the abbey's remarkable architecture and its significance in history. Originally built in 1203, Iona Abbey fell into neglect after the Reformation. However, thanks to the dedicated efforts of members from the Iona Community, a Christian settlement led by Scottish ministers, this sacred place is being meticulously restored. The community aims to bring religion to factory workers and residents in impoverished areas of Glasgow. The picture reveals an enchanting rural scene with no people present. It portrays a sense of tranquility as it overlooks a serene lake surrounding the abbey. This landscape serves as a testament to both nature's allure and human resilience. The Iona Community operates primarily from their head office in Glasgow but annually gathers on Iona Island for three months to train new recruits and host Christian camps. Their commitment to preserving this historic site demonstrates their dedication not only towards faith but also cultural heritage. Maurice Ambler's photograph encapsulates the essence of this architectural gem amidst its ruined state at that time. With his skilled use of photography, he emphasizes both the grandeur and vulnerability inherent within these ancient walls. This archival piece offers viewers an opportunity to reflect upon religious devotion, historical preservation, and Scotland's rich cultural tapestry all captured through Ambler's lens.
