Admiral Porters Fleet
Lithograph captioned Admiral Porter?s Fleet Running the Rebel Blockade of the Mississippi at Vicksburg, April 16th 1863. At half past ten P.M. the boats left their moorings & steamed down the river, the Benton, Admiral Porter, taking the lead -- as they approached the point opposite the town, a terrible concentrated fire of the centre, upper and lower batteries, both water and bluff, was directed upon the channel, which here ran within one hundred yards of the shore. At the same moment innumerable floats of turpentine and other combustible materials were set ablaze. In the face of all this fire, the boats made their way with but little loss except the transport Henry Clay which was set on fire & sunk. Vicksburg, Mississippi, USA, 16 April 1883. EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the daring and audacious feat of Admiral Porter's fleet as they bravely navigated through the treacherous waters of the Mississippi River during the American Civil War. The print, titled "Admiral Porter's Fleet Running the Rebel Blockade of the Mississippi at Vicksburg, April 16th 1863" showcases a pivotal moment in history. In this historic image, taken on that fateful night, we witness Admiral Porter leading his fleet downstream towards Vicksburg. As they approach the town, an intense barrage of enemy fire is unleashed upon them from both land and water batteries. The channel narrows to a mere hundred yards from shore, making their journey perilous. Despite facing overwhelming odds, these courageous boats press forward undeterred. Innumerable floats carrying combustible materials are set ablaze by Confederate forces in an attempt to hinder their progress. Yet against all odds, Admiral Porter's fleet perseveres with remarkable resilience. The photograph serves as a testament to bravery and determination amidst chaos and danger. It immortalizes those who risked everything for their cause during one of America's darkest periods. While some losses were suffered along the way - notably with transport ship Henry Clay being set on fire and sunk - overall success was achieved. This lithograph stands as a powerful reminder of our nation's turbulent past while honoring those who fought valiantly for freedom and unity during this defining chapter in American history.
