Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole (1772-1842), wearing the insignia of the Order of the Bath, the Portuguese Order of the Tower and Sword and the Army Gold Cross.
The Honourable Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole (1772-1842) was born 1 May 1772. He was commissioned as a cornet in the cavalry in 1787. He served as an officer with the 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment of Foot from 1805, eventually rising to the rank of general in 1830.
During the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic period Cole served in Ireland, the West Indies, Egypt, Malta, Italy and the Iberian Peninsula. In 1806 Cole, commanding the 1st Brigade, fought at the Battle of Maida in Italy. Cole gained further distinction during the Peninsular War, commanding the 4th Division. He was wounded twice, at Albuera in 1811 and at Salamanca in 1812. Cole was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath on 2 January 1815.
As well as representing Enniskillen and Fermanagh in Parliament Cole also served terms as Governor of Mauritius (1823-1828) and Governor of Cape Colony (1828-1833). In 1833 Cole returned home with his family. He died in 1842 at Highfield Park, in Hampshire, but was buried in his familyAs vault at St MacartinAs Cathedral, Enniskillen.); eNational Army Museum; out of copyright

This print showcases Brigadier-General Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole, a distinguished military figure of the 19th century. Created in pencil and watercolor by an unknown artist around 1835, this artwork is housed at the National Army Museum in London. Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole (1772-1842) is depicted wearing the prestigious insignia of the Order of the Bath, the Portuguese Order of the Tower and Sword, and the Army Gold Cross. Born on May 1st, 1772, he began his military career as a cornet in the cavalry in 1787. Throughout his service with the renowned 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment of Foot from 1805 onwards, he steadily rose through ranks until reaching general status in 1830. During times of conflict such as the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods, Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole demonstrated exceptional bravery and leadership across various theaters including Ireland, West Indies, Egypt, Malta, Italy, and Iberian Peninsula. Notably commanding the 4th Division during Peninsular War battles like Albuera in 1811 and Salamanca in 1812 where he was wounded twice. Aside from his military achievements, Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole also served as Governor of Mauritius from1823 to1828 followed by a term as Governor of Cape Colony from1828 to1833. After returning home to England with his family in1833; however tragically passed away at Highfield Park Hampshire before being laid to rest at St Macartin's Cathedral vaults located Enniskillen. This remarkable portrait immortalizes an extraordinary man whose legacy continues to inspire admiration for his unwavering dedication to duty throughout an illustrious military career combined with notable political accomplishments.
