Bates, who was born on March 2,1938, in Leeds, England, joined Chelsea in 1982 and would go on to serve as chairman from 1982 to 1993. He oversaw the modernization of Stamford Bridge, which included the construction of the Shed End Stand and the expansion of the East Stand. Bates also implemented a number of innovative marketing and commercial strategies to increase revenue and improve the financial stability of the club. Bates was not only a successful businessman but also a passionate football man. He had a deep understanding of the game and was known for his shrewd tactical acumen. Under his leadership, Chelsea enjoyed a resurgence in fortunes on the pitch, winning the FA Cup in 1990 and the League Cup in 1995.
